The word “marshmallow” has a very different meaning today than it did historically. Once used to describe a plant used to make medicine dating all the way back to the Egyptians, today the word brings about thoughts of puffy white things that make hot cocoa sweeter and give rice cereal bars their shape.
Bronchitis is a condition in which inflammation occurs in the mucus lined membranes of the passages in the lungs. These passages are known as the bronchi. Because inflammation worsens as the condition persists, the airways become more and more narrow which can lead to increased coughing and discomfort. Most people with bronchitis suffer from the acute form of the condition, which can last up to a couple of weeks. However, chronic bronchitis can last much longer and often recurs year after year.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are incredibly common, and they are caused by various bacteria making their way into the urethra and up into the urinary tract where they cause an infection. The symptoms of a UTI include burning, itching and problems urinating, and they can affect anyone at any age. Many times, urinary tract infections go untreated and may resolve on their own after a certain period of time. However, typically antibiotics are used in order to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection.
Almost everyone will experience a bout of heartburn at one point or another. Whether due to questionable dietary choices, lifestyle factors or an underlying medical condition, it is an incredibly common malady. Heartburn can be extremely uncomfortable and symptoms include pain, a burning sensation and bloating. Over the counter medication is one of the most often used sources of relief and natural calcium is often one of the main ingredients. There are also other natural remedies for heartburn for those that dislike the chalky consistency of calcium based remedies.
Inflammation is not a condition in itself but a byproduct of a pre-existing medical condition. Inflammation serves as a reaction by the body to something dangerous or damaging like an injury or a foreign germy invader. Inflammation marks the start of the healing process by the body, and when it is present, it means that the body is doing what it needs to in order to correct damage and restore healthy tissue and cells. Just like other ways in which the immune system of the body responds, inflammation serves as a protecting and healing method.
Arthritis is commonly thought of as one condition. However, collectively, arthritis encompasses over one hundred different ailments that all relate to joint stiffness and pain. Symptoms can vary depending on which type of arthritis is present. For instance, in the case of osteoarthritis, gradually worsening pain and stiffness are the most common symptoms. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, however, swelling and inflammation accompany the typical joint related symptoms.
Constipation is one of the most common, everyday health complaints. And the condition is experienced by just about everyone at some point during the course of their lives. For many, constipation occurs regularly due to diet and lifestyle factors. There are many over the counter remedies for constipation and the large majorities of them are highly effective, and can relieve a clogged up colon quickly. However, many of these types of products promote unwanted side effects such as abdominal cramping and excessive diarrhea. Choosing tea for constipation instead by taking advantage of some of the beneficial compounds found in plants is one way to possibly avert these types of side effects while still enjoying relaxing relief.
Sore throats can be caused by just about anything. While it can be possible that bacteria or a virus may be to blame, environmental factors like pollution and dry air may also be a cause. Allergies can also contribute to a sore throat and even certain medications can be to blame. This is why treating a sore throat can be somewhat problematic. Antibiotics are often not necessary (although that does not keep them from being prescribed) and there is not much in the way of medication to combat viral sources. This leads many headed straight for the drug store for over the counter relief for their sore throat.
