Rosemary today is considered little more than an herb – one that is quite popular in Italian fare in particular. But, the plant has had incredibly important roles throughout history, even being mentioned in myth and legend. Rosemary is associated with both weddings and funerals, being hailed as both a symbol of love and remembrance as well. And, both the Virgin Mary and mythological Greek Goddess Aphrodite have ties to rosemary. Another important function of rosemary historically was as a medicinal remedy for various health concerns. Both the essential oil and the leaves of the plant were used in health applications, the latter being best enjoyed when brewed into a tea. Rosemary tea benefits are thought to be plentiful and related to the essential oils found in the plant.

It may be no coincidence that anecdotal accounts of rosemary centuries ago include numerous health benefits. It’s said that the over seventy year life span (long for the time) of Hungary’s Queen Elisabeth was attributed to use of the herb. She may have enjoyed a rosemary tea recipe similar to those enjoyed today that includes little more than three tablespoons of fresh herb and two cups of boiled water, where the mixture is removed from heat, steeped for ten minutes and then strained. Rosemary is also a part of many herbal tea recipes and is thought to be particularly tasty when added to green tea mixtures.

Carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid are the two chemical constituents that are thought to be behind the majority of rosemary tea benefits. There has not been a lot of study into just how effective the two chemicals may be in helping certain types of health conditions, however in time, the true medicinal potential of rosemary may be better explored providing further evidence to support the most well known health uses for the herb, ten of which can be found here.

1. Memory: Separate small studies have been done to evaluate the role of rosemary in maintaining a healthy memory. Those related to inhaling the herb’s aroma found some memory improvement, and intake of the herb yielded similar results. What’s interesting to note here is that though there seems to be some evidence to support rosemary tea benefits in terms of memory function, too large of doses have been linked to the complete opposite effect.

2. Arthritis Pain: Some initial trials suggest that rosemary may be an effective agent against some of the pain and discomfort related to arthritis. Though little evidence exists to support this use, rosemary has been utilized for pain relief for not only arthritis but also sprains and strains for a very long time.

3. Diabetes Management: The flavonoid content of the herb is associated with many rosemary tea benefits, including the plant’s purported functions in the management of conditions like diabetes. Because of the effects the flavonoids may have on DPP-IV, more research into this connection could unravel exciting results.

4. Cancer Prevention: Most studies relating to rosemary and cancer involved powdered versions of the herb, but since their chemical composition varies little, it’s possible that rosemary tea benefits may also include preventing cancer. In studies, carcinogenic effects in various circumstances were reduced by as much as 75%!

5. Bacterial and Viral Infections: Rosemary is thought to be a potent natural antibacterial and antiviral agent. In particular, rosemary tea benefits may include use in common conditions like yeast infections. Applications against Candida albicans have also been indicated.

6. Indigestion and Gas: Rosemary is a popular herb for common maladies affecting the gastrointestinal tract, and some of the herb’s use in cooking is related to these uses. Skin and Hair Care: Rosemary has been included in products for the skin and hair for a long time, and it’s the preservative qualities of the carnosic acid found in the plant that are likely responsible for these effects. Most commonly, skin and hair related benefits from rosemary refer to the herb’s addition in cosmetics or when otherwise externally applied.
